Simone Gray is a 2018 Bertha Justice Fellow and Candidate Attorney in the Durban Regional Office.
Simone Gray holds an LLB degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, summa cum laude, as well as an LLM by dissertation (medical law), cum laude, from the same university. In 2016, she attended the University of Cape Town as a Mandela Rhodes Scholar where she studied towards an LLM in Human Rights Law. She is currently completing her dissertation in fulfilment of this degree. Her dissertation focuses on ukuthwala and child marriage in South Africa, looking specifically at whether law reform holds any promise of shifting behaviour and attitudes.
Prior to joining the LRC, Simone worked as a legal assistant at the UCT Refugee Rights Clinic. She has also worked as a first year ad hoc lecturer as well as a tutor and teaching assistant at UKZN. She has a passion for human rights and social justice with a particular interest in women’s rights and the right to equality.
