Lethal in Disguise 2: The Health and Human Rights Impact of Crowd-Control Weapons in South Africa

The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) in collaboration with the International Network of Civil Liberties Organizations (INCLO) is set to host the South African launch of Lethal in Disguise 2: How Crowd-Control Weapons Impact Health and Human Rights. The event will take place on Friday, 20 September 2024, from 09h00 to 12h30, at Flame Studios, Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct, Johannesburg.

The launch of this critical report comes at a time when South Africa is reflecting on the broader implications of the use of force against civilians, with echoes of the Marikana miners’ strike and other tragic events still reverberating through the country. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has faced mounting criticism for deploying crowd-control weapons (CCWs) such as tear gas, stun grenades, and “double-ball rounds” (rubber bullets), which have caused severe injuries and fatalities during protests.

Lethal in Disguise 2 explores the harmful impacts of CCWs on public health and human rights, and this event aims to raise awareness and advocate for improved regulation and accountability.
